Chest Expansion Test

Orthopedic Test Chest Expansion Test
Method With the subject standing or sitting erect, the examiner takes a chest measurement with the tape measure over the lowest part of the fourth intercostal space with the patient maximally exhaling. The subject then maximally inhales and another measurement is taken. Normal expansion for an adult male is at least two inches, and one and one-half inches for an adult female. Less than these amounts would be a positive test, indicating thoracic fixation. This is considered an important sign in any ankylosing condition such as Marie-Strumpell Disease.
